When you consume plenty of sodium in your food, it can make your body obtain more water, but not in the desirable areas, e.g under your eyes.

Similar to the funtion of garlic, it can extend your life period. It kills bacteria in your mouth that will reduce the bad breath smell if you consume a 'mint' after onion.
